Comet 2 by bloknayrb Comet 2 by bloknayrb
Worked on this for a bit and I think it's done, but critiques are definitely encouraged.
Obviously, this portrayal of a comet is not entirely realistic, it is more stylistic, but I like it :P

Those are actually the comet trails. I'm going to take it as a good sign that I remember often seeing you say that a new piece is different from my older works ;)

Quoted for importance :|

Anyways, this looks much better than the ones you showed us beforehand. I especially like how the viewer's eye is being directed towards the flare. Nice job, keep it up! :ahoy:

Hear hear :highfive: I HATE people who upload PNG's or Bitmaps - there's rarely a work on here that's worth waiting more than 10 seconds to load in our fast-paced world unless it's really huge in resolution.

Plus when I was on pre-paid internet - PNG's were the next biggest usage-guzzler I encountered after videos and animations :X

Thing is that I'm having a flatrate until I hit 6GB of traffic. And each time I open a png-file, a little "noez, my poor traffic-limit is being reached"-thought-bubble appears next to me xD

PNGs only are better if you need little, transparent icons. From my own experience, 16x16 PNGs are usually smaller than jpeg's. Makes it a bit easier to design websites and such.
But other than that, I can certainly miss that 1% in quality being lost to being saved as a jpg :p

Lol, I smiled at "1% of quality" since really, a large JPEG saved at maximum compression quality (12) would require you to zoom in to actual size and look very carefully to see any artifacts, or if its a print you'd probably have to approach it with a magnifying glass, and what normal person does that? :sherlock:

All my prints are JPEG's too and I haven't received any complaints  I think people are still stuck in the old way of thinking when JPEGS didn't have the "quality" option and were automatically bad. Just like all those who say Macs are better for digital art. There was a time PC didn't really cater for that end of computing and so all major studio's invested in Macs, but these days the two have balanced out and poor work should only be blamed on bad workmanship, yet some people are still stuck in the old frame of mind that "an artist would produce even better work if they did it n a Mac" so yeah, it's like that, and sacrificing a mere 1 or 2% of the image quality is worth knocking 20MB's or so off the file size :p

To be honest, this is the very first time I have heard that a Mac is supposed to be better than a PC. I remember be sitting in front of a Mac in 1996 or so and desperately trying to do stuff with it. You can't imagine how glad I was when I booted up my parents' Win95-PC xD
Since that point, I categorically hate anything that Apple produces :p

Back to image-formats, the only way how I saw that 12-jpegs have less quality than PNGs was when I went nuts with the selection tool to remove a frame. There are some bad (yet invisible) pixels scattered around. Even after looking at them at 3200% zoom, I couldn't see them, though =P
Anybody saying "oh, you use jpeg! It's so bad!" has either a super-fast internet or no clue about the current standards. Or both

Lol, I used Mac's in 2007 and 2008 as part of a digital media course and even in those 2 years I just couldn't feel comfortable with them. They always struck me as valuing style over practicality. Windows aren't as pretty and sleek but I just find them so much easier to use :phew: iPods are the only Apple product I use :XD:

Yeah, as you said - the artifacts in a 12-quality JPEG are there, but only evident with the selection tool (and even then, you have to have the "tolerance" set pretty low) but if the human eye can't see them, then there's nothing to worry about =p

Indeed, what you can't see doesn't exist (remind me of that when I start studying particle physics xD). Hence, when you can't see a quality decrease, it's not there :P
