Just messing around with the 3D tools in Photoshop CS5 Extended. Pretty cool, but not exactly fantastic. Maybe I'll take a crack at more dedicated 3D tools :P

I don't remember where I got the texture for the large planet from, but the smaller planet's texture is from scratch. Pretty cool (for me anyway).

Ooh very cool! At first glance I thought it might be a tribute to Mars and Venus which are now visible as two bright stars in the sky =)

Nope, though that has been pretty cool. Too bad I don't have a telescope :(

Interesting. Might have to play around with CS5 extended. Of course, 3DS Max seems to do it right all the time, but there are a lot of things to learn to make it look right.

I think after trying this I may try out a dedicated 3D program. It worked all right, but isn't particularly intuitive and seems a bit "slapped on."

Send me one of your planet textures and I'll do a render for you in 3DS Max 2012. If you are a student, you can download a free full registered version of 3DS Max 2012 to use. I have done both in Photoshop and 3DS Max. 3DS Max definitely does it right... when you figure out how to properly utilize the features.

I did not realize that. The thing is, is 3D that much better for planets? I find it a lot easier to work with 2D (but Photoshop's 3D is kind of slapped on).

Yes. 3D is much better for planets. Photoshop does not do justice for 3D.

Hmmm... I suppose I'll have to give it a try.
