Well. My first tutorial. Its pretty basic. I tried to make it as interesting as possible. Let me know if I should change anything, or if you liked it.
Thanks for watching :)

Man i agree with you so badly on your first points about the poles, and how people often just arent thinking their work through.

......artistic flair and style are things that must be explored, not learnt.

Yeah, I've always wondered why I never saw it in any tutorial beforehand, I figured it was time.

It is always disturbing when somebody just plops a planet down regardless of the light source(s), this tutorial is a good reminder for people who do that. :)

The future belies your preconceptions...

Please further enlighten the uneducated crowd. Blah the poles thing really annoys me, too. I don't like it either when planets have conflicting lighting set ups. Such as in this piece =p [link] the planet lit by the supernova should also be lit by the sun and the planets lit by the sun should be lit by the supernova as well.
Great tut!

Interesting... I've always admired his work so much that I never even bothered looking for errors, I just looked at what impressed me...
Thanks for the comment, and the watch! Funny, I thought I was already watching you, but apparently I'm not... easily corrected ;)

Happens all the time to me, think I was watching someone but it turns out I wasn't. Even great works of art can have flaws. There are more flaws in his works, but I'm not going to point them all out, because my work isn't perfect either, far from it.
Thanks for the watch :)

Now I remember why I do my planets in a fully 3d program- errors like those although not always as drastic, are all over the place...

Alas, not everyone has a 3d program, or wishes to use one. I'm actually thinking of expanding this to make it more in- depth.

I am really amazed at how much some of the 2d created images 'appear' 3d - I tried that early on with the Gimp, with little success, although I did create one with the sun supernova and parts of it had hit the planet that actually looked ok... (if I had just done a better 'space' behind it I'd have been much happier)....
